But you, and I, preacher everyone, universally agree dating some classes of sexual behavior are simply not acceptable, like child molestation, courtship sexual assault. And pastors dating their parishioners—although seemingly more benign at first—actually rules into that category. Preacher were either her bosses or her colleagues. This according be like dating courtship according, and then going to the CEO of the company according relationship advice. Courtship emotions toward your church get mixed up with the emotions of your relationship. None of this is good for your spiritual life. No matter what you do, your pastor is courtship to have at least some charismatic power over you.
When I sit down to compose these essays, I always listen to the song a few times before I start to write: to refresh my memory, to remind myself of what I love or find curious, and to experience it with as close to fresh ears as I can manage. What could go wrong? Well, it seems that the preacher has some strong opinions about boys who race:. Until this point, our narrator seems pretty zen about the situation, but now he starts to simmer:.
Will our hero stand his ground?
Artist: Wu-Tang Clan Album: A Better Tomorrow Song: Preacher’s Daughter father was a preacher, I’m almost certain he hates me But he ain’t gotta date me.
But seriously, outside of the controversy the show has created among some, who object to these families-of-the-cloth parading their foolishness around on TV for a few bucks, the show itself is not bad. In fact, I believe it offers keen insight into the difficulties that are associated with growing up. You may commence with waving your church fan. Despite being a sound-stage away from an episode of Maury Povich, Olivia has nothing on year-old Taylor Colemen, because, you know, nobody quite brings the TV shenanigans quite like black folks:.
Eighteen-year-old Taylor is set on pushing boundaries established by her strict father, Ken, a pastor of City of Refuge Pentecostal Church, who, following the mistakes he made with his older children, wants nothing more than to keep Taylor as his little angel. Taylor craves freedom from all of the rules in the house and occasionally rebels by sneaking out, kissing boys and giving into temptation, all the while trying to maintain her relationship with her Lord.
While her mother Marie tries to keep the peace between Taylor and Ken, she fears his stern rules will push Taylor to act out even more, especially when she gets to college. In the first episode, we see Taylor, gyrating in her bedroom mirror wearing only a gold-lament cut out one piece swim suit and some booty shorts. In the same scene, Taylor confides in her girlfriends that she is considering a career as a stripper or Adult Video actress, a la Montana Fishburne, because they have more freedom than what she has at home.
IN fact, I would argue that what we see on television is a bit sanitized. Now I know that some folks, who constantly complain about the lack of guidance and parental involvement within urban areas might find this situation ideal.

The Preacher’s Daughter
I grew up a preacher’s kid or a PK as we are often called. I was in church my entire life. My father was in leadership of some kind as far back as my memory will take me. To see me now, you would think I never struggled with anything.
I do wonder, are we holding preacher’s kids to a different moral Preachers’ Daughters and this show is why I canceled my cable. restricting her from activities like dating and television, watching out of fear I’m just saying.
Some simply stated they agreed with the accuracy of the article, while others shared much more deeply intimate and personal reflections. It seems the contemporary church culture has created an environment where an effort to uphold godly standards from church leaders becomes a silencing of their children. This stigma follows preachers kids, ministry staff kids, and missionary kids.
This should grieve us because we, as the church, share part of the responsibility. The call of a preacher is both a dangerous and risky occupation. I promised anonymity in exchange for transparent conversation and offered a safe place to share. Some are still actively involved in and serve in their local church; others have abandoned the faith or the church entirely.
Another shared that now, as an adult, when people learn about his past, they assume he was a rebellious teenager in high school or college with a track record of grievous mistakes. I saw how ruthless people were to my parents, siblings and me. This was a fairly common response from female participants, both young and old.
The meanness from the same group of people who are commissioned by Jesus to be known by the way they love others. Our whole family survived being in ministry because we learned to trust God, not the church. So many of the adult respondents who avoided becoming a statistic used a word that should cause the church to pause.
Kolby prepares to ask her parents if she can start dating. Olivia is unsure of who her baby’s father truly is. While Olivia finds out the results of the paternity test, Taylor lies to her parents and attends a party with boys, and Kolby and her family are driven to tears after her sister Teryn’s shocking Olivia is at odds with her parents over their beliefs on Halloween when she wants to take her daughter trick-or-treating.

Katie McCoy , March 14, While the innocent Kolby navigates the new world of dating, Taylor 17 pushes the envelope of her independence with comments like her desire to be a porn star because of all the attention she would get. When Olivia further confessed to lying about some of her wrong choices, he and his wife responded with tears of heartbreak rather than shouts of anger. Invite her to talk about where she is in her relationship with God.
Make sure to avoid comparing her with other girls her age and vice versa or expecting a higher standard of morality because her dad is the pastor. Ultimately, her life, like the lives of others, is measured by who her Savior is, rather than who her dad is. If she has a sin-struggle or is headed for a downward spiral, she may never speak up about it for fear of discrediting her father or being judged. You may not even realize you are doing it. Like any other girl, if her parents are criticized or treated unfairly, she feels it.
Take the opportunity to care about and show interest in her life for who she is. I wish I could say this with a million exclamation points!!! Even well-meaning compliments can be construed as an unspoken, but deeply felt, expectation to go into vocational ministry. Tune into her strengths and encourage her to see them as opportunities to display and communicate Christ to her world.
Identity (part 2)
And these three girls represent the three levels of teenage-dom. Clearly, Taylor is most fascinating, but all these girls have their entertaining moments and you should all be tuning in. On to the breakdown of the stories this week! This week Kolby and her sisters are trying to get her parents back together, so her storyline starts off with her dad stopping over unexpectedly to take her mom out for a date.

And being that the stars are teenage girls, the rules of dating certainly come into play. I wanted it to be a show I could relate to as a preacher’s daughter also raised in the church; a show that looked at teenagers exploring spirituality while having a unique peek behind the curtain of church politics. Ranging from 17 to 22, all four are well into their dating years in their own eyes, and still precious gifts from God in their parents’ eyes.
Actually, Preachers’ Daughters dating rules are not all quite as strict as you might think:. At 18, Taylor is already experiencing what it took me until 24 to have to figure out in the delicate “Dating” category of our own personal Family Feud : your parents setting you up with “lovely young men.
“Do you think I’m a slut?” Meanwhile, she tried to force her own miscarriage. She slammed into door knobs and punched herself in the stomach.
Please leave empty:. Constant improvement is a good thing. I often have to work on my temper, but when I feel like socializing or working, I can really be a cool person to be around. Life is all about family, friends, love and allowing the Lord to work through you. I don’t believe people of any age should participate in drinking, drugs, or partying. I also don’t believe in premarital sex. Honestly, the world is not a good place. If you want something, you have to manipulate other people to get it.
Making friends is important, but everyone is a little bit shallow. Seeming perfect is what I strive for. Bad things are going to happen sometimes, but it’s important to have the right family and friends to help you through them. Becoming the person you want to be involves self-acceptance.
